How to Buy The Best Metal Detector: A Short Guide

What is the best metal detector and how should it work? This really depends on what type of metal you are looking for and what the environmental conditions in the area are. There are many different factors that can influence metal detectors’ ability and therefore your selection.

The main things to consider is how confident you are in controlling the settings, the ground conditions and what you are looking to find during your treasure hunts.

The Basics of Metal Detectors: Tech Specs

1. Target Identification

The Target Identification is a numerical value assigned to identify different metals. Each model has a different system and you would need to adjust to this with each new purchase.

2. Discrimination

The discrimination settings allow you to control what metals will be acknowledged and what will be ignored. You have many kinds of discrimination modes that you can pre-set into the metal detector to make it easier to find certain items such as coins, jewels or relics. Most discrimination modes work by rejecting readings below a certain target ID.

  • There is another discrimination feature known as “notching”, which allows you to specify another range you want to exclude. The notching system is just another layer of discrimination.

For example, I am metal detecting in the park, and I am getting a lot of reading for pull-tabs or rusty nails. I can use the discrimination mode to eliminate all readings below silver, this way I will only get feedback from items with a target ID above that of silver. If I want to target only silver, I can use the notching system to eliminate all readings above it.

You can use such features in a combination of ways to customize the detector to pinpoint what you are looking for.

3. Ground Balance

Soil naturally has small quantities of metal mixed into it and they can interfere with the metal detectors readings. The ground balance allows the device to ignore this interference and focus on finding objects made of metal.

There are different degrees of control on each detector model. Some models will adjust the ground balance automatically for you, others come pre-set into the device, some require manual programming with each hunt and others have a mixture of all of them.

4. Operating Frequency

The frequency of metal detectors relates to how many times the signal is given out and fed back each second. The frequency impacts how deep the detector can search.

  • Higher frequencies are better for finding smaller objects but they can’t penetrate as deep.
  • Alternatively, lower frequencies are better at finding objects buried deep but can miss smaller objects.

The frequency you need depends on what kinds of treasures you are looking for.

5. Sensitivity

As its name suggests, the sensitivity is how responsive the detector is to feedback from metal.

  • If the sensitivity level is high, it will allow the detector to pick up on smaller items but can get interference from background levels.
  • If the sensitivity level is low, it reduces the responsiveness but increases the likelihood of getting feedback from desired items.

6. Search Depth

The search depth is how deep into the ground the metal detector can penetrate to find treasure. Search-depth can be affected by the soil type and the coil size.

Types of Metal Detectors’ Coils

1. Size & Shape

It is important to pick the right size and shape of the coil to use, as it can change the way the detector interacts with the environment.

  • As mentioned above, the size of the coil determines how deep the device can detect objects and the shape of the coil can influence where you are able to use it.

Most often, the coils are round or elliptical. Round coils are better at detecting deep down and have more sensitivity, whereas elliptical are better for having a wider detection field due to their elongated length.

2. Configuration

There are two main configurations of a coil: concentric and Double-D (DD). They change how sensitive the detector is to mineralization in the ground.

  • Concentric coils are best for non-mineralized soils, as they are more sensitive to the mineral content of the soil. This would mean that there would be a lot of static interference while you are detecting.
  • DD coils are the opposite; they are best suited to high mineralization. They have lower ground interference and sensitivity, so they are better for reducing unwanted feedback.

What Else You Should Know before You Buy one of the Best Metal Detectors from Our List?

Make sure you do a thorough research before you purchase the best metal detector on the market. Allow us to give you some pointers!

  • Research what ground conditions and likely targets you are likely to find in your area.
  • Consider what items you are looking to find.
  • Do some homework to find out what best suits your needs and how much control over each setting you will need.
  • If you want to try out metal detecting for the first time to see if it is the right fit for you, we would recommend buying a budget model with some pre-set modes or easy configuration. However, if you are new to metal detecting and want to invest in a long-term hobby, we would suggest going for the mid-ranged products that have some pre-sets and some custom controls to allow you to ease into fully controlling the settings.
